MemoryDex challenge with Karen
It's a concept created many years and based on the old 'rolodex' that many people used to store phone numbers in. These little 4" x 3" cards have grown in popularity more recently. They are a great way to use up your stash, and if you only have a short amount of time on your hands, enables you to get creative on a very small layout!
They can also be challenging - if you're used to making 12" x 12" layouts, this is a great way to challenge yourself to work on a smaller space - even smaller than a typical card making size. You don't need anything additional in your craft room to make these, I'm going to show you how you can make these what what you are likely to have on hand already.
Before we start making a couple together, let's look at ways to store these
I bought a cheap gift box from the dollar store to use and as you can see on the middle photo, I've attached some balsa wood on the insides to hold the cards in place. You can even use paper straws for the same effect - the sizes are perfect! Simply measure the length to size and place towards the centre of your box - I used a glue gun to fix in place.
Making a Card Template
Whilst you can buy dies to cut these automatically, if you're starting out, I'd recommend creating one yourself first without this. Cut your paper 4" wide, but 3" high, then use a single hole punch towards the edge of the bottom of the card. Simply snip away each side of the punched hole to create the opening where your card will fix onto your straw/wood when being stored.
You can also create yourself a template, but doing this with sturdy craft paper - next time you can simply draw around to create more cards!
Steam Punk Dreams Memorydex Card
I created some embellishments to add to my card, firstly flowers. I made these using my electronic die cutting machine, but you could could by hand, layering the petals gives a great 3d effect, I alternated layers using both sides of the patterned paper.
I then used the Mesh Cutting die from some scrap paper I had left over in the collection to add another level of interest to the card.
I used the Precision Glue Pen from Couture Creations to add adhesive on the mesh paper and secured over the centre of my card.
After adding flowers I then finished off with adhesive pearls in the centre of the mesh paper. Have you tried the Couture Creations tweezers? These are perfect for applying small fiddly pieces to any layout?
Lest We Forget Memorydex Card
After cutting out my card from the patterned paper in the collection, I stamped the Open Poppy mini stamp in the centre of the card. I then also stamped this image on a post it note [that is fully adhesive] and then fussy cut this out.
I put the post it note over the poppy stamp on the memorydex card to cover it - this technique is known as masking and will protect my open poppy and enable me to stamp a cluster of poppies together.
I stamped the Open Poppy all over the memorydex card, to create my own patterned paper from the stamp. Once complete, I used colouring pencils to colour these in. To help blend the colours, I use gambol to blend in the colours.
Do you have leftover bits of foil in your stash? I used these in between the poppies to finish off the card by applying adhesive, then rubbing on the foil using a bone folder.
To finish off, I used the Labels Mini Die Set from My Secret Love collection, as well as the stamped sentiment from the Be Mine Mini Sentiment Stamp Set.
I hope you've been inspired by this to try out creating your own Memorydex card? Why not join the May Challenge with Couture Creations and don't forget to share these with us, happy crafting.
